Darius Thornton will do whatever he can to prevent another accident. He was onboard a steamboat schmoozing clients for the family shipping business when the boilers blew, killing several people. He tried to save as many children as he could, but one girl slipped through his grasp and didn’t make it to shore alive. Now, Darius is wracked with guilt, thinking “if only…” He has bought a house in the middle of nowhere away from family and friends to conduct experiments on boilers in an effort to figure out what went wrong and to try and find a way to make boilers safer. He needs a secretary to transcribe his atrocious handwriting in his log books in order to submit them to a research institute so the institute will have his knowledge and maybe produce government legislation about boiler safety standards. Enter Miss Nicole Greyson and his world adjusts with her as his new focus.
Nicole Renard excels at science and math, but has been told that men don’t like that in a woman. She is the only child of a father who owns a successful steamboat shipping business. He wishes he had a son to take over the business, and Nicole knows this. She fears she will always be a disappointment to her father, even though she knows he loves her. Her father is dying and she must find a husband quickly to be the heir for the shipping business. She takes her dowry; a bejeweled dagger bequeathed to her family by a famous pirate, to draw the attention of a competing shipping family away from her parents as they claim the dagger belongs in their family, not Nicole’s. Before her journey to New Orleans to find a husband can start, she is forced to change her plans and is left with no money. She sees an ad for a secretary and is hired by the grouchy Darius Thornton.
This is a predictable love story, but enjoyable to read nonetheless. Nicole shows Darius the uselessness of guilt and how it is robbing him of a relationship with God. Darius becomes her anchor in the storm of the conflict in her life over whether to keep her vow to her father or to choose her heart instead. I liked Darius’ character that was rough and crusty on the outside, but underneath was a warm and loving heart just waiting for the right woman to give it to. I also liked how strong Nicole was in her faith at such a young age and in trying circumstances.

I love Karen Witemeyer's novels. I could so relate to the heroine from Head in the Clouds. The whole concept behind Stealing the Preacher was hilarious. Full Steam Ahead has humor, and it is a light read, but Karen manages to give her characters serious issues that must be addressed.
Nicole is a tomboy and has just returned from finishing school because her father is very ill. She has always felt inadequate because her father has always desired a son who could take over his family business. For the time period, her father's concerns are real, but Nicole can only see that her father, despite encouraging her intellect and hoydenish ways, doesn't consider her qualified to take over his business. Her loyalty to her family, though, sends her on a trip to meet potential husbands who could one day run the family business. She takes with her the family heirloom, a dagger that she believes to be more important to the family than herself.
Darius is simply divine. Another reviewer described him as arrogant. I wouldn't. He has a single-minded devotion to solving problems with steam engines because of something that happened in his past. He believes that he can redeem himself by coming up with a solution. When Nicole muses on what it might be like to have that single-mindedness focused on her, I also fell in love with Darius (don't tell my husband!).
With villains, meddling servants, an endearing child, and two people who are intellectual equals and the solution to each other's problems, this book is fun. But along the way Nicole discovers her true worth and Darius is reminded that only One can redeem him and make him new again. Because the two of them are in close proximity, there is an element of steaminess that usually lacks in most Christian romances. However, this is tastefully done, and readers should remember that even Christians are attracted to each other.
I loved the outrageous & intelligent Nicole and rumpled, outspoken intellectual Darius. Thank you, Karen, for another wonderful book. I'll think about this one for a while, despite its lightheartedness.
Very cute story about a young lady who is sent off by her aging parents to get married to save the family dynasty-shipping business. Due to avoiding the family rivals who are bad dudes our heroine ends up on Galveston island and not New Orleans. Here she encounters the hero - and good young man, who has survived a steam ship accident due to overheated boilers. Being from a very wealthy New York shipping family our hero is determined to solve the boiler problem to save lives. He becomes obsessed with his work so much so the locals thinks he's a bit touched in the attic. Here comes our heroine who needs a job so she can but her ticket to N.O, find the man to save the family business. OK I think you can figure it out from here....enjoy.
Nicole Renard is determined to protect her parents and make sure the Jenkins brothers do not take the Lafitte dagger. However, when her father sends her to New Orleans to find a husband and suitable heir to his shipping business, things don’t turn out as planned. Lack of ready funds finds her as secretary to a man obsessed with making steamboat engines safer. Then, Darius Thornton starts heating up her heart, and with the enemy hot on her trail, the scene is set for an explosion of huge proportions.

I found this novel to have a slower start than most of Karen Witemeyer’s. Until chapter four, I begin to wonder if I’d have to rate a book of hers less than five stars for the first time. And the fact that a single woman from a well-to-do family in 1849 would not have been sent to New Orleans to find a husband without a female chaperone just increased my concern. However, the book took off after that, and I found it hard to put down. It turned out to be just as engaging as all of Karen Witemeyer’s books, and the narrator does a great job, as well, in the audible version.
