Harry and Emma waltzed their way into my heart and left me feeling like royalty! I was completely enthralled the entire time, even when Emma frustrated me!

Emmaline Dove has been Harrison Marlowe’s secretary for five long, gift-purchasing, time-keeping years. She’s always prompt, extremely organized, and the pillar of etiquette, something her womanizing rake of a boss knows nothing about as far as she can tell. But considering he’s a publisher and her dream is to be a writer, the time has been well worth it. So she thought.

Harry Marlowe loves women, although he’s vowed to never marry again. After being shunned by his, wife which left him divorced and his family’s reputation ruined, he’s had more than enough of relationships. A few months of guilty pleasure and a parting gift are all he’s good for when it comes to the fairer sex.

Finally growing tired of his constant rejection of her manuscripts, Emma quits without notice, and ends up working for Harry’s top competitor after the man offers her her own column in his newspaper. When she’s an instant success, Harry realizes his mistake and makes an attempt to win her back as his secretary. When she repeatedly refuses, he does the only thing he can. He buys the newspaper. Determined to keep her in his employ, Harry agrees to give Emma her own section in the newspaper, but insists he gets to edit. As disdain turns into mutual respect, which quickly grows into attraction, the two are left trying to figure out how to move forward.

I was hooked the moment I read how Emma handled Harry’s jilted lover. Her always-proper demeanor was a welcome flaw, which made her all the more likable, until she frustrated me – but it was only for a second. Despite my eventual frustration with her character’s actions, I related to her, and I didn’t feel overwhelmed by her behavior. Harry was quite entertaining, and I loved his interaction with his family. I laughed not only when he was trying to be funny, but even when he wasn’t. I was glad that his rakish behavior had a reason other than just loving sex.

I was pleased with how the shift in their relationship was crafted -each developing a new view of the other, as well as themselves. The flow was easy, the pace good. I don’t recall one page that wasn’t engaging.

And Then He Kissed Her Laura Lee Guhrke 9780061143601 Books Reviews

This is my favorite kind of romance. The characters are real, each carries some relationship issues they must overcome that are interesting and relatable, and both the hero and heroine are individually likable and complex. Their romantic growth towards each other is believable and well-paced, meaning we get romance on practically every page.

I also like the whole plot set-up. It is an unusually well-written boss-employee relationship that changes and evolves in several different ways. I don't like to give much detail in my comments so I can't explain more, but with this plot we get to see and experience much more about the depth and dimension and heart and passion of both leads. And humor - their exchanges are filled with wit, humor, and both romantic and sexual challenge.

This is an entertaining and rewarding romance and I highly recommend it.
Emmaline Dove longs to have her "etiquette" books published, but every time she passes one off to her publisher boss, Viscount Harrison Marlow, he barely takes a look and promptly rejects them. She's been the perfect secretary, running his office smoothly and she's taken all his rejections with a positive attitude. In fact, she's been so compliant, the reader believes she's being taken for granted. Who in the world would ask his secretary to give his mistresses their conge when he's finished with them? Harry would, that's who. Who would ask and expect his secretary to go out and select all the gifts for family members' birthdays? Harry would, that's who?

Harry is firmly against marriage, having divorced his first wife and causing his mother and sisters to be rejected by many of society's elite personages. But, when one hears the back story of his marriage, it's perfectly understandable he opted out. But... now he's never going to marry again. Nope, he just has a long string of black haired mistresses.

When Emma hands her most recent manuscript to Harry with the hopes it will be the one he will publish, as always she has a positive attitude. But when Harry returns from his weekend and once again hands her the rejected manuscript, he makes the mistake of admitting he doesn't know who Mrs. Bartleby is. Uh oh, Emma realizes for the first time, Harry's never read any of them for Mrs. Bartleby is Emma's pseudonym and it's on the title page of all the manuscripts. The dependable, steady, somewhat boring Emma gets very angry and for once in her adult life decides to take a chance. She turns in her resignation via mail and doesn't show up come Monday morning causing the entire office to be thrown into a turmoil. When Harry chases her down after a very unsettling day, she informs him she has a new job, writing a weekly etiquette column for one of Harry's competitors.

This is when the story truly begins because Harry gets his first glimpse of a side of Emma he's never known. Little does he know, it's only the beginning. Things eventually turn topsy turvy in Harry's life, which in turn contributes to Emma's life being turned upside down. The path to their love affair is delicious all the way. Laura Lee Guhrke can write some fascinating dialogue. This was a very sweet story. However, eventually Emma realizes she wants more out of life than what Harry is willing to give her. This decision brought the story full circle and we get our charming, virtuous girl back who has the strength to say, "I am worth more than what I'm getting - I deserve a full life, not a secret life with my lover, rather the benefits of a blessed marriage bed, including children." I liked it than lines were drawn and people were forced to face their fears and ultimately make the right decisions.
